Pen Mar State Park
Mile 1067.4
There were no big ascents in the 5ish miles to Pen Mar, but the descent into the park itself was steep, rocky, and a little nerve-wracking. Still, made it to the park and the Zero Day Stay hostel around noon.

It was a little weird coming back to the park—my brother and I had started here on a shakedown hike last June, my first multi day backpacking trip. Coming here in April was a different vibe entirely. The bathrooms were closed (pretty much all the bathrooms in state parks so far have been closed for the season; sometimes there is a port-a-potty provided, but not always—and not here.) The pavilion where we’d sat to get our breath when returning that trip was packed full of picnic tables and benches stacked and piled up to the rafters. The playground areas were empty.

It was an easy walk to the hostel for the park—for once, no shuttle necessary. And this hostel, relatively new from what I understand, was nice. I had my own room with an outside entry; all the rooms did, with doors on the opposite side that led into a shared common room and a kitchen. There was a resupply shelf in the corner with prices clearly marked and QR codes to pay via your method of choice; and there were some supplies available for free use. My room had a little tv, charging cables, and an easy chair that quickly became my home base. On the side table were some packages from friends and family who had sent supplies and helpful stuff, just waiting for me. It was grand.

ESSC was still there, taking a second day to himself before moving on. I also met Shuttle, who had been staying there for a few days but was headed out tomorrow. They invited me to split a food order, and I got to have pizza for the first time since starting my hike. Tremendous. I think all of our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, because there was a lot of food left over. Between the extra food, the comfort of the room, and a strained muscle in my lower back, I decided to stay a second day myself. After ESSC and Shuttle had headed out, Passin’ Thru showed up—I’d last met him in Harper’s Ferry. He was delighted to share the extra food with me. Later, two section hikers came by, a mother and son, I believe. I spent a little time talking with folks, but mostly, I slept. I repeat: it was grand.
